Evin Somerstein

Mediator | Arbitrator | Attorney

Evin is one of Atlanta’s most respected Family Law mediators and is widely recognized as a guiding force in Georgia’s alternative dispute resolution community. With nearly 30 years of experience as a divorce attorney, Evin has represented clients in virtually every aspect of family law from divorce, to paternity, custody fights to dividing multi-million dollar businesses. Despite his skills in advocacy, Evin came to realize early on that there had to be a better option for couples seeking to divorce instead of the traditional path of battling it out through the court system. Combining his knowledge of family law with his natural talents in working to resolve matters through negotiation and finding common ground, he is uniquely qualified to guide parties through the mediation process.

"A great mediator must have the knowledge to facilitate the right conversations and the experience to help couples create workable solutions for their families."

My Story

Evin's early start in criminal defense and nearly 30 years of trial experience has created his compelling and dynamic courtroom presence.  He carries that same authority and wisdom to the table in both Mediation and Arbitration settings. As an attorney, his unique style and ability to express his client’s point of view has earned him the respect of judges, attorneys, and clients alike. In his law practice, Evin routinely assists clients in achieving positive outcomes in complex cases addressing issues including divorce, custody, executive compensation, protection of personal business interests, and protection of premarital assets.

Considered one of the "pioneers" in the Atlanta Collaborative Law Movement, Evin has been instrumental in establishing and developing Collaborative Practice in the Atlanta legal community. Evin is founding member of the Atlanta Collaborative Divorce Alliance, a closed network of elite practitioners in Collaborative Law. While his work as an attorney focuses solely on Family Law, approximately half of his cases choose to process Collaboratively, seeking to resolve their issues by working together while avoiding the need for Court intervention.

In 1997, Evin first began his formal training as a Mediator after realizing how much he could accomplish by working with both parties in their divorce, instead of being limited to representing just one side. Honing his mediation skills over the years, Evin has developed a unique approach to working with parties and guiding them through the tough choices they face when ending a marriage. Qualifying to serve in the prestigious position of Arbitrator was the next logical step in the growth of Evin's Dispute Resolution practice. With his vast knowledge in all aspects of domestic relations law and his years of experience creating outcomes that actually work for families and individuals facing divorce, Evin takes pride in his ability to make the hard decisions for parties when they are unable to reach decisions themselves.

In addition to being a registered Domestic Relations Mediator with the Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Dispute Resolution, Evin is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Atlanta Bar Association, the Academy of Professional Family Mediators, Amicable Divorce Network, the International Association of Collaborative Professionals, and is a Barrister in the Charles Longstreet Weltner Family Law Inn of Court.  Evin is one of a select group of attorneys to earn a peer rating of AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubble, signifying his rank at the highest level of professional excellence for  his legal knowledge, communication skills and ethical standards. He is also routinely selected for inclusion in the Georgia Super Lawyer (Atlanta Magazine), as well as being recognized as Georgia's Legal Elite (Georgia Trend). Evin is the author of numerous articles relating to family law, and regularly serves as a guest speaker at Continuing Education Programs for fellow family law attorneys, as well as appearing as a special guest commentator on television and radio programs throughout the city.

He is a 1994 graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law, and received his undergraduate degree  in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 1989.  Evin enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children, plays golf whenever the opportunity arises, and shares his love of music through guitar.
